April Student of the Month

Carolina Gholson

Carolina GholsonPlease tell us a little about yourself.
I'm very honored and humbled to be recognized as the student of the month after so many years of practice. I'm from Nicaragua, the land of lakes and volcanos. I moved to San Antonio 17 years ago when I married my husband, BillyBob. I also lived in Miami, Florida for a few years. I have a beautiful son, George who's 14 and 2 dogs, a lazy pug named Chowder and a crazy English bulldog named Max. I love traveling, enjoy meeting new people, culture and traditions.
What brought you to the yoga practice? Crossfit?
About 10 years ago, I was having serious issues with my lower back. I had 3 herniated discs and I was willing to try anything that would make me feel better and luckily, I found the Hollywood Park studio. My first class was terrible; it was unlike anything I had tried before. After a week of practice I felt the benefits of the postures, I can honestly tell you my body healed, my lower back issues went away. Since then, everywhere I go, I try to find a studio where I can practice but nothing compares to The Union.
How often do you take class?
I practice yoga and mix it up with Crossfit about 5-6 times a week. Sometimes you'll see me here early in the morning and sometimes late in the evening.
What specific physical issues, if any, did you have before taking you first class?
3 herniated discs was my main issue, everything else was in place.
What are the greatest benefits of your practice?
There are so many benefits to my practice; to name a few, flexibility and my weight is under certain level of control. The non-physical benefits are even better, I worry less, I care less, I have a better sense of calmness in stressful situations, but most importantly I accept who I am.
How has this practice changed your health and life? Any emotional or other benefits?
Without the yoga I can't find my reset button. To me yoga is life, is health and that's why I make it part of my schedule, part of my life.
What is your favorite part of the yoga? Crossfit?
My favorite part of yoga and crossfit is the wonderful staff. Your outstanding service and the community you have created are totally amazing. Your staff is full of positivism and encouragement. I have to thank every single instructor for his or her time, dedication, patience, motivation, and encouragement. I totally respect and admire every one of you.
