December 2015 Student of the Month

Christine Nichol

christine-nicholPlease tell us a little about yourself.
I enjoy hiking and camping with my husband and dogs, cooking, working with plants and flowers in the yard, and an occasional "girl's night out".
What brought you to the yoga practice?
I was experiencing a lot of annoying joint pain and stiffness that kept me from running and also interfered with other activities. I finally went to the doctor and it was determined that I have some age-related arthritis and spinal stenosis. When I expressed concerns about these things resulting in a loss of flexibility and mobility over time, my doctor recommended Bikram yoga to relieve the discomfort and maintain my lifestyle.
How often do you take class?
I try for 4-5 times a week when I am in town and enjoy visiting other studios when we travel to places that have Bikram yoga. (So far, the Union teachers and staff are the BEST!)
What specific physical issues, if any, did you have before taking you first class?
None other than the age- related issues mentioned earlier. I have been blessed with great health.
What are the greatest benefits of your practice?
It has pretty much eliminated arthritis discomfort and stiffness so that I can continue to be as active as I want to be and comfortably do whatever I need or want to do.
How has this practice changed your health and life? Any emotional or other benefits?
Knowing that this practice effectively addresses my health issues without medications gives me great peace of mind. Also, I can bring the joy, laughter, friendship and encouragement that I get from being around the great teachers, staff and other yogis into the rest of my life. Proper breathing keeps you calm is just outside the hot room too!
What is your favorite part of the yoga?
I know that no matter how difficult the class might have seemed or how much else is going on in the rest of my life, after class I always feel better physically and emotionally.
