November 2015 Student of the Month

Renee Juarez

ReneeJuarez Please tell us a little about yourself.
I was born in Albuquerque, NM while my dad was doing a residency at the University of NM teaching hospital in general surgery. We moved around south Texas but ended up in San Antonio when I was three years old. I am a computer programmer and received my MBA from Our Lady of the Lake University with a concentration in electronic commerce. Currently I am working at Trinity University. I live in my own home with my 3 furry children (Sparky, Napoleon, and Snoopy). I enjoy traveling, yoga, and the company of friends and family.
What brought you to the yoga practice and/or crossfit training?
Multiple family members had been encouraging me to go. So I purchased the Groupon and with hesitancy I attended my first class (taught by Charlotte Morales) in December 2011. Needless to say I was hooked from day one.
How often do you take class?
I just completed my 4th 60-day challenge this past October. When I am not doing a challenge I try to attend class at least 5 or 6 times a week.
What specific physical issues, if any, did you have before taking you first class?
Prior to having a regular yoga practice I was in the doctor’s office (my dad’s office) at least every 6 months with an ankle sprain. At one point I had a grade 3 sprain on one ankle and grade 4 on the other. He sent me to physical therapy but it didn’t help the way yoga has. I can say that since I began practicing I have NOT sprained my ankle once. Yoga has also helped with my allergies. I can go into a yoga class congested and come out feeling refreshed. I need class to function; it’s my medicine.
What are the greatest benefits of your practice and/or training in crossfit?
The feeling of well-being. Doing yoga relates not only to my physical well-being but also to my mental, emotional and social health. It helps me deal with difficulties in life, including stress, anxiety and the pressures of everyday. Another great benefit are the friendships I have formed at the studio. I know these will be life-long friends.
How has this practice changed your health and life? Any emotional or other benefits?
It has given me balance. It has helped me become stronger both physically and mentally. In addition, I have a more positive outlook on life, always looking at a situation, as the glass is half-full.
What is your favorite part of the yoga and/or crossfit?
I love that when you are in the hot room no one is judging you. Everyone is focused on themselves and their practice. I also love how passionate the instructors are, which in turn, is a great motivator.
