November 2016 Student of the Month

Stephen Li

Stephen-LiPlease tell us a little about yourself.
First, I'd like to thank The Union for choosing me as their student of the month. I'm floored to be recognized by such a great group of people. A little about myself, I have lived in both Seattle and Boston for extended periods of time and in 2014 my wife and I decided to move to San Antonio to start a new chapter in our lives. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my family, finding great places to eat, walking the furry babies (Bo and Jackson), and golfing.
What brought you to the yoga practice? Crossfit?
From the years of golfing, training for various races, and just getting older, I began to have lower back and knee pain. I went to Bikram Yoga to get some relief and stretch out my achy joints. I vividly remember from my first Bikram class, how hot, humid, and smelly the room was. Being in the camel position for the first time left me completely dizzy and I wanted to puke. Somehow, I made it through the class ....
How often do you take class?
I try to get to 5-7 classes a week. I take the early morning class and it helps me start the day off. I will also drop in on a Hot Pilates or CrossFit class to round out my workouts.
What specific physical issues, if any, did you have before taking your first class?
Chronic lower back and knee pain. Breaking news, getting old sucks!
What are the greatest benefits of your practice?
I have made living an active and healthy lifestyle a part of my life. Being able to do yoga, CrossFit, Hot Pilates etc ... allows me to be a better version of myself. Also, I have accumulated a lot of cool Union tee shirts.
How has this practice changed your health and life? Any emotional or other benefits?
Physically, my back is feeling great these days and my knees are doing much better. Mentally, I am less stressed about traffic, my job, and the curve balls that life throws at you. Overall, I’m in very happy place and enjoying life.
What is your favorite part of the yoga and or Crossfit?
It’s the people that make up the Union community! We’ve got a great group of members who inspire me with their commitment and hard work. We also have the best teachers who make me laugh and provide guidance to perform the exercises safely. Finally, we have awesome owners who continue to find new ways to make dreams come true.
