October 2016 Student of the Month

Garrett Glass

glassPlease tell us a little about yourself.
I am a chatty, bearded, number crunching, truth seeker from Amarillo, y'all. When I'm not kicking Pedro's a$$ in the Box on Broadway, I paint with acrylics and write fictional novels. I have an affinity for the Latin Culture. Don't be surprised if I try to speak to you in Spanish. You might see me out, dancing bachata (Auburn!!). My go-to playlist is dominated by Luis Miguel, Maná, Nicky Jam, Shakira and J Balvin.
What brought you to the yoga practice? Crossfit?
I began practicing yoga to quiet my mind and cure my body. This helps me tap into my creative side. I began Crossfit to break myself down and build strength.
How often do you take class?
Whenever I have to opportunity.
What specific physical issues, if any, did you have before taking your first class?
I fractured my back during my Friday Night Lights years and subsequently experienced a reoccurring incident during my college football days.
What are the greatest benefits of your practice?
Detox capabilities after a night of too many Modelos, superhuman strength and Gumby-like mobility. In my search for meaning the Union has provided great friends and a healthy mindset, allowing me to discover that true strength comes from within, but you have to water that plant. When I'm here, I feel loved, I feel healthy and sometimes, I even feel smarter (this happens if I'm having a conversation with Jill). I have no doubt that the Union, if used wisely, creates a marriage or a bond between the mind, the body and the soul.
How has this practice changed your health and life? Any emotional or other benefits?
Overall, the yoga, the people and the Crossfit have all served as catalysts to assist me in my efforts to become a better person, both physically and mentally. As such, the benefits, for me, are all-encompassing and impossible to quantify, much less describe. Now, all I need is for Shi to come to my house and cook for me because the Union doesn't serve me food...yet.
What is your favorite part of the yoga and or Crossfit?
I was going to say that Hot Pilates was my favorite part of being with the Union. That was before we had a Crossfit class filled with the Silver Spurs Dancers. So, my favorite thing is the anticipation of what might come next!!! In all seriousness, the health benefits of hard work is the best part but the people (members and teachers), here at the Union, are what keep me coming back.
